Imagine you're walking around your hometown, when you feel a mysterious thing touch your face. You were about to scream when you noticed it was your friend Jon's cold, pale, dead hand. His body hang limp from the tree ahead of you. Your throat went silent from fear. Your eyes scanned the horrific scene, his torso was cut open, multiple thick lacerations ran down his arms and his intestine were cut out, hung around his neck, and then tied to a branch on the tree in a noose like fashion. In Japanese Buddhism, jikininki (Japanese: 食人鬼, "human-eating ghosts") are the spirits of greedy, selfish or impious individuals who are cursed after death to seek out and eat human corpses. They do this at night, scavenging for newly dead bodies and food offerings left for the dead.
